If you read any book about catching bass, you will find that the majority of authors actually make a point of distinguishing between the different species that come under the bass heading. They do this for a reason. It is easy to tag all bass with the same label and same characteristics when you are out fishing and many inexperienced fishermen and women do. However, doing so could actually reduce your chances of getting a bite because there are actually significant differences between the species and those differences can help you to catch them if you pay attention!

The two most popular species of bass to fish for in the United States are the largemouth bass and the smallmouth bass. The differences between the two are marked and this will affect your ability to catch both types and exactly how you should go about doing so. The following information will help you to tailor your style to catching first largemouth bass and then smallmouth bass, after we have initially discussed the variations between them that can indeed make all the difference between a net full of bass and a fruitless day on a lake with nothing to show for it!

Smallmouth bass are far wilier than largemouth bass. They seem to have more in terms of street smarts than largemouth bass do and this can actually make it far more difficult to catch a smallmouth bass than a largemouth bass. They are much more aware of their surroundings and any threats to their own mortality and will actively move away from the unfamiliar, including boats, strange potential food sources (otherwise known as bait) and any individuals that fish anywhere near them. This may be because they are slightly smaller than their largemouth counterparts but it will provide you with an excellent challenge because what they lack in size they make up for in brains! This may be why largemouth bass fishing is more popular than smallmouth bass fishing, but whatever the reason behind it, you need to tailor your style to the type of bass that you want to catch!

If you go fishing for smallmouth bass, you have to be a little more cunning than usual. They will actively move away from a boat or anything else that spooks them and making your presence unknown is a challenge in itself as they do not tend to live in murky water. The clearer the water, the better the smallmouth likes it and, as such, they can see you coming a mile off! They will be able to spot you from even the deepest of waters so be sure to tailor your bass fishing strategy to accommodate this fact. For example, be sure to approach the area that you want to fish in very slowly and with as little noise as possible. This may mean that you have to kill the boat engine some way away from your destination, but it really does not matter because the pull of the deeper water will take you to where you want to go anyway. This is not necessary for largemouth because even if they initially clear the area, they will be back when they catch a glimpse of the bait! You can go straight to where you want to go, but it still may be wise to ease off as you near your desired spot!

Texas is undoubtedly a popular state for bass fishing. Many of the individuals that have previously visited the area wax lyrical about the bass fishing action and plan to return time and time again. It is no wonder when you look at the climate, the sheer choice of lakes and the abundance of largemouth and smallmouth bass in the state! No matter where you go in Texas, you can find some sort of bass fishing action, which says a lot given its size! The information below will give you a quick introduction to the nature of bass fishing in the state of a good idea of where to go for it!

Planning Out Your Trip

The first thing you need to consider if you are heading to Texas for some bass fishing action is where you are going to go. There are numerous lakes and choosing from them can be a nightmare because many of them have excellent bass fishing and facilities.

However, you might want to plan your trip out based on the time of year. For example, the bass in the North tend to start spawning a little before those in the South of the state. This begins from early March onwards and it is just before spawning and a couple of weeks afterwards that provides the best bass fishing. The bass are plentiful and very active around that time of year so you should enjoy a good day’s fishing!

The beauty of the Texas bass fishing lakes is that around spring you can try out various techniques to see what kind of success rate they bring you. There are more than enough bass to be able to catch so you can really go to town and experiment. This is obviously a tip for beginners, but even if you are an expert you could always use a day to refine your technique!

Where To Go

There are several major lakes that you could check out on your travels, all of which have great bass fishing action and could prove to be your own personal paradise. The following lakes are especially good and arguably rank above the other lakes in the state:

East Texas

East Texas is a haven for bass fishing enthusiasts with Caddo Lake, Fork Lake, Toledo Bend and Lake Of The Pines all within around 200 miles of each other. You only have to look at one of them to see what all have to offer. Take Fork Lake for example; it is one of the premier fishing lakes in the state for largemouth bass. In fact, it is considered the best bass fishing lake in the state by those that take part in the many tournaments there. All of the lakes in the area have some of the biggest largemouth bass in the country though so you may be faced with a challenge!

The best time for bass fishing in East Texas is early March to late April with some frequent fishermen and women in the area even advocating late February as well. The bass are plentiful and extremely active at around that time of year.

Bass fishing is extremely popular and enjoyed by millions. Catching bass can be very challenging especially if you are going after those big ones.

However, there are a few strategies that can help you be successful and reel in any size bass you go after. One of the first things that you need to do is get familiar with the bass. There are several species of bass but the most well-known are the largemouth, smallmouth, white bass and the stripped bass.

The bass truly is a remarkable fish with a mouth and stomach that will stretch wide enough for them to eat food that is half their own length. They feed the most aggressively during the spring spawning season and during the late afternoon all the way through till early morning.

They begin feeding on small crustaceans when they are young and when they start to mature they will eat insects and smaller fish. Adult bass will add worms, frogs and crayfish to their diets.

Knowing what they eat naturally will help you know which baits to use when fishing for the bass. Using baits that are similar to what the bass normally eat will get their attention faster. You don’t have to worry too much about the largemouth bass because they will eat just about anything but you will need to be pickier with some of the other species of bass.

However, when you are going after the big bass you should keep in mind that they will seldom waste their time on small bait.

Most anglers prefer live bait when fishing for bass because it does get the best results especially when you are fishing for the big bass.

When using live bait you do need to keep it fresh so make sure you have a place to store it where it will stay cool. If you prefer not to use live bait or it is not appropriate for some reason, then you can use artificial lures catch bass.

When using artificial lures most anglers prefer spinnerbaits because they are considered to be the best option when it comes to the bass species. One reason they are so popular is because they can be used in most any type of water or fishing condition.

You can use them to go after bass in the open waters or around structures and weedy areas, all the places where you can find this species. They are also easy enough for even the novice angler to use with great success. Crankbaits are the next popular artificial lures used for catching large bass.

Bass Fishing Equipment

To be a successful bass fisherman that hauls in the big boys, you must have the right equipment. Your rod and reel needs to be strong enough to handle the weight and struggle of a big bass. Otherwise, you will be watching them swim away from you instead of pulling them into your boat.

Every piece of gear you use to fish with is important right down to the hooks that you buy. They need to be in good condition and most of all, sharp. Dull hooks will cause you lots of problems and could make you lose your catch.

The line used also needs to be strong enough to handle the weight of the bass without snapping. All of your gear should be compatible with each other.

Catching Largemouth Bass in winter is a difficult proposition at best. Much depends on what part of the country you are from and how cold the winter is. If you are talking about cutting a hole in ice that is 12 inches deep and trying to catch Largemouth Bass you can forget it now. If the water temperature is under 40 degrees you will not catch Largemouth Bass like you will other species. At 45 degrees, the action picks up a bit. For my money I would not target Largemouth Bass until the water reaches 50 degrees. Keep in mind the effects of the sun and water depth on water temperature. A lake may be near 40 degree at one end and as hot as 50 degrees on the other end.

Your first consideration is what equipment to use. The key piece of equipment is the rod. Largemouth Bass will be very sluggish at this time of year. You need a rod that is very sensitive and will let you know when the bait is picked up. As is often the case in life you get what you pay for. A high quality fishing rod may cost a bit more than a common rod but at this time of year the investment is worth it. You will not feel many pickups with a common rod. Instead of viciously attacking it’s quarry Largemouth Bass at this time of year often merely pick it up in there mouths and swallow it. Once they feel something unnatural in their mouths they will drop the bait. This often happens without the angler even knowing the bass ever picked up the bait.

Any normal spinning reel will be sufficient. Largemouth Bass at this time of year are very sluggish and do not fight with anywhere near the same intensity they do in the summer. You will need to use very light line, certainly no stronger than 6 pound test. Because you will be using a light line you should have a small reel also. You will not need a great deal of line capacity. You will not be making long casts and will not likely have much line pulled off the drag. Remember that these very are very in active and very wary. In summer they will attack a bait without regard to heavy line in the area. In winter they will inspect any offering in a meticulous manner. Use the lightest line you can, four pound line is sufficient for any Largemouth Bass you may encounter in winter.

Your next consideration is where to fish. I would select a location in reasonably shallow water. Many Largemouth Bass suspend in deeper water, but these fish are not feeding. When they do decide to feed they will assuredly head to shallower water, I look for 6-12 foot water depth in the winter. I also look to fish in the sun, pick a spot on the lake that the has shined on for awhile. You will not likely have any green vegetation but you may be able to find some standing or fallen timber. Either of these two locations are prime winter locations. If you can find any green vegetation then by all means fish these areas.

One in position you need to select a bait. As with any other kind of fishing live bait always works best. This is probably more the case in winter than other times of the year. If using artificial baits you can eliminate spinnerbaits, crankbaits and just about any fast moving or topwater bait. Lures you use must be fished very slow and very deep. I like to use either jig or plastic worm at this time of year. You need to fish them very slow. I prefer to bounce them on the bottom, sometimes even allowing them to sit for several seconds before I continue my retrieve. You almost cannot fish too slowly. Many of the strokes I have gotten have happen after I have let a bait sit for several seconds. The Largemouth Bass often will move towards a bait then stop moving and stare at it, often hitting the next time it moves.

While bass fishing is popular throughout the United States, most people think of fishing as a sport that is mostly enjoyed by people in the far north, the far south, or the Midwest area of the country. Though the state doesn’t quite fit any of these categories, Arizona bass fishing is quite an industry, and there are several lakes in the state that offer a fine crop.

Lake Pleasant offers some excellent fishing, with 114 miles of shoreline encompassing 23,662 acres of fishing, camping, and boating. Dammed from the Agua Fria River, this impoundment is fed by both the Agua Fria and the Colorado Rivers, per changes made and a new dam built in 1993 to help redirect water to the central and southern parts of the state. The reinfusement of water into the area has led to a virtual boom of bass in the area, making it a great new location for bass fishing. You’ll find striped bass, white bass, and largemouth bass is plentiful, with smaller numbers of smallmouth at times. Lake Pleasant is located about 30 miles from Phoenix, making it a convenient day trip when on vacation in the area.

For another great Arizona bass experience, you can visit Lake Powell, created and named after civil-war veteran Major John Wesley Powell with the building of the Glen Canyon Dam from 1956-1966. This lake is incredible, with around 2,000 miles of shoreline and a depth of nearly 570 feet when full to capacity. It follows the river gorge and is full of fishing opportunity. There are a number of common game fish that are popular among anglers, not the least of which are small- and largemouth bass and striped bass. With several full service marinas as well as dirt access roads and primitive launching sites, the lake covers a land surface of over 160,000 acres and rises to 3,700 feet above sea level. Not only will you find great bass fishing here; you’ll also enjoy visiting a unique lake environment.

Theodore Roosevelt Lake, named for the dam that creates it, is a huge reservoir that also yields excellent fishing opportunities. Once the largest manmade lake in the world, Roosevelt covers over 17,000 acres branching from Tonto Creek and the Salt River. There is a wildlife refuge area here, so be sure to observe all rules and regulations. However, you can also enjoy some serious fishing for largemouth and smallmouth bass, as well as several other popular game species. Because the water here is warm throughout the year, the fish grow fast, and you’ll find some trophies, especially in the shallow brushy bays where spawning is rampant.

To be able to fish for bass is a skill many anglers would love to have, but what is even more remarkable is fi you are an angler with a high success rate for catching bass. The best way of becoming successful in your bass fishing attempts is to pick up as many bass fishing tips as you can from the experts. Study these tips and incorporate them into your techniques. Like learning anything new, you will have to practice them and possibly put your own touches on them before them become automatic.

The first thing you should know about fishing for bass is the fish itself. You need to know what it eats, its habits, what type of water it is usually found in and what part of the lake is the best fishing spot. There are also several varieties of bass, such as:

- striper

- largemouth

- smallmouth

- spotted

- black, and

- sand bass

Each of these requires a different set of skills in order to have a successful catch. Therefore, it is essential that you know what type of bass inhabit the waters you are fishing.

Smallmouth and spotted bass prefer deep water, while largemouth and black bass can be found in either deep or shallow water. The season of the year in which you are fishing is also important because this will affect the feeding habits of the bass. In the spring, for example, carp is widely available in small sizes, so it would be to your advantage to use a gold or bronze colored lure in the shape of a carp at this time of the year. Shad is a regular staple when it comes to food for bass and this bait is hard for them to get in the summer months. This is something you should take into consideration when bass fishing in summer.

You should know the spawning season and where they like to hide along the riverbank. Some of the usual habitats include areas where trees have fallen into the river, cervices in the riverbank or areas of the river close to the shore where there are lots of weeds. Once you learn how to detect places where bass could be hiding you are well on your way to a successful catch.

Most anglers never bother with the electronics on their boats until they have been unsuccessful in getting a bite for a considerable amount of time. However, the best time to use the depth sounder to your advantage is when you do get a bite. Then you should check to see if there is a school of bass in the area and the location of your lure. Once you see where the fish is, then you can throw the lure out in this location.

You also need to match the water, the season and the location to the type of bass that you are after. Some prefer to eat worms and real bait while others are attracted by the shiny objects glistening in the water and you should use artificial lures.
